Horses, along with their riders, need to be completely confident in their footing in order to perform well when jumping, and the best way to ensure confidence is to work on a surface well-suited to the discipline. 

The ideal showjumping surface needs to be firm yet responsive, providing a secure footing to allow the horse to push off well behind the jump and land safely, limiting the risk of concussion upon landing by ensuring it doesn’t rut.
