A complete arena refurbishment
With a 296-acre working farm and centres for small animal care and veterinary nursing training, as well as an impressive equine centre which houses the only British Horse Society examination centre in Wales, Coleg Gwent’s campus in Usk is an established educational facility providing a diverse range of further and higher education programmes and learning opportunities.
Having realised the surface on their 60m x 40m outdoor arena was becoming a little tired, Coleg Gwent enlisted the help of the Equestrian Surfaces team, alongside our construction partners, D&C Groundtec, to carry out a full arena refurbishment and give the site a new lease of life.
It’s been a pleasure to work with the team at Equestrian Surfaces, who were able to advise on the most suitable surface and complete the whole new arena refit in just over two weeks.
After lifting the existing surface, D&C Groundtec laid a new foundation stone to assist with site drainage, before installing 200m of Duralock perimeter fencing and laying 480 tonnes of our own Cushion Track Classic surface.
The entrance ways were then tidied up and an additional 130m of post and rail fencing installed to separate the paddocks from the riding arena, making it riding ready!
“We went for the Cushion Track Classic, which is a superb surface for the diverse range of equestrian disciplines we offer,” says Coleg Gwent’s Land-based Facilities and Functional Resources Manager, Mitchell Rees. “The arena not only looks great, but more importantly rides incredibly, and is an invaluable resource for our learners completing further and higher education equine programmes here at Coleg Gwent.
“We’re also excited to be able to welcome clients back to the Equestrian Centre as a much-loved events venue.”
